Week 20: the halfway scan

Reaching week 20 is a real milestone — you're halfway through your pregnancy, and it's often when the mid-pregnancy scan takes place.

What the scan checks

The 20-week scan (sometimes called the anomaly scan) takes a detailed look at your baby's development, including their heart, brain, spine, and other organs, and checks how your baby is growing.

On the day

It usually takes around 30 minutes. You may be able to find out your baby's sex if you'd like to — just ask. Bring any questions with you; the sonographer and your midwife are there to help.

This is an exciting glimpse of your baby, but it's also a medical check — try not to worry, and lean on your care team for anything you're unsure about.
